Hazel's only weakness is that two life for an influx of mana is a high price to pay if you plan to be using it on a frequent basis

While it never reaches the ceiling of Toxic Deluge or Damn, it does give you a reanimate if you put seven mana into it, which makes for some nice late-game value, and makes it attractive for X-spell and big mana decks
It may have been an upset at the time, but the Mirrodin-era Standard bannings mean your Spike, Tournament Grinder is allowed to snag you whatever mana fixing you need
